A Living Wage

We do this work because we are passionate about our mission. Nobody gets into farming to get rich, but earning less than a living wage requires farm workers to subsidize our local food system. This is not sustainable.

What Is a Living Wage?

A “living wage” is defined as what it takes to pay for basic needs, but not have frills like going to the movies or having much savings, if any.

Our EDC provided the following estimates for a living annual income on SJI*:

  • $32,000 per worker

  • $47,000 per worker for heads of household ($94,000 per household to keep two adults and two kids fed and in childcare)

*From a 2022 correspondence with the San Juan County Economic Development Council.

What We’re Aiming For

Starting 2024, we’re aiming to pay all core crew members

Sponsor An Employee

To start, we’re going to aim for $35,000 for seasoned crew members. We will pay each crew $20,000. If the community sponsors the remaining $15,000.
